You can buy paint or stain/varnish remover to remove all of the old finish. Be careful if you must scrape some areas not to scratch the wood. Use steel wool for hard to reach areas. After all of the old finish is off you may need to use a fine grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
If painting or staining ask your local paint store which paint is best for children. I think there is a paint specially for childrens furniture.
First, you need to strip and sand the crib. (Check out the MinWax line at your local hardware) Make sure you get all the edges and work them down smooth with a fine grit sandpaper. Also, replace any loose or ill fitting hardware and use a good wood glue (I recommend Elmer’s Wood Glue) to help solidify the joints.
After that, you can use a latex paint to paint it white (Disney has a great line and so does Nickelodeon). If you use a stain, make sure it is water based. You can ask your local hardware what the best stain is for your application. Good luck!
